Hello Africa Blanket

BACKGROUND
For the people of Lesotho, the Basotho blanket wearingis a long and rich cultural tradition. Symbolically, blankets represent different rites of passage and life stages. Some blankets are worn during initiation, others are only worn by a king or a bride, and then there are the everyday blankets known as Sefate and Morena.

The Hello Africa Blanket

The Hello Africa blanket is a celebration of rich African storytelling and symbolism that culminates in a modern interpretation of African pattern design. It is purposefully woven in the traditional Basotho way, showcasing traditional thread count and textiles, by the same manufacturer that makes all the Basotho blankets that we’ve grown to love.

The blanket’s feature design is grounded by the meaning of the ‘Y’ shape that appears within the South African flag. It symbolizes the convergence of a diverse South African society by taking the road ahead in unity.

The black and white geometric patterns presents a modern and minimalist interpretation of traditional patterns from various African cultures. The green band in the centre (traditionally thin lines running horizontally across Basotho blankets) represents growth and a fertile nation. The subtle ‘X’ in the background is a reminder of our African struggles.

The Hello Africa blanket is a bold and unapologetic African statement, “Hello world, I am Africa.”
